Chapter Thirteen

Miss Emma Love

requests the honour of your company

for an evening of fine dining and intimate conversation.

They were back at the Guild of Underwriters. That didn’t sound right. Company of Underwirers? Whatever. Emma liked coming back to venues she’d used before. Much less margin for error when she’d already made sure everything worked to her liking once.

And, in this case, it meant she got to catch up with Harriet and get all the details on another budding romance. In the event she didn’t even have to ask.

Harriet ran into her, almost the second Emma was through the door of the function room, emitting what could only be described as a squeal. An actual squeal coming out of an adult human woman. ‘He’s perfect. He’s met my parents already, and my mother adores him, and even my dad – my dad has never liked anyone I’ve been out with – my dad said he seemed like a decent chap, which is basically the highest praise he can give.’

Emma took Harriet’s hands. ‘And what about you? Are you happy?’

Harriet nodded. ‘So happy. Thank you. Oh, and speak of the devil!’

Robbie Martin strode into the function room. ‘Sorry, Miss Love. I’m guessing I’m not supposed to see behind the curtain while you’re still setting up.’

Emma smiled. ‘I think we can make an exception.’

He entwined his fingers with Harriet’s. ‘I did want to thank you. Harri told me you had a hand in persuading her to make a move.’

‘All part of the service.’ With that in mind, she knew she had a couple of members not attending tonight, and the meals were already paid for… if she moved that person so they were nearer to… and then she could put him there… and that would leave an empty space at Robbie Martin’s table. ‘If you’d like to come along tonight, Harriet, I can make space.’

‘Well, I’m supposed to be keeping an eye on things.’

Perfect. ‘You can keep an eye on things while you have dinner.’

So what if Harriet wasn’t a client? Mr Martin was, so that was a big tick in her spreadsheet – another perfect pair matched up successfully.

‘Ok, but I’ll knock my meal off the invoice. I am supposed to be working.’

Even better.

Robbie Martin was looking thoughtful. ‘I haven’t seen much publicity about all this, apart from the initial flyer and newspaper piece.’

Emma tensed slightly. ‘Well, I’ve been quite busy actually making all this happen.’

‘Not criticising. Just wondering who does your PR?’

‘Well, me.’ Obviously. Other people didn’t do things the way Emma wanted.

He pulled a business card from his pocket. ‘Well, if you want any advice or if there’s anything I can do to help, more than happy.’ He squeezed Harriet’s hand. ‘I owe you. Anyway,’ he turned to Harriet. ‘I will see you both tonight?’

They said their goodbyes. Another very happy couple that Emma could tick off, but there were still so many to go. No time to rest on her laurels. ‘So, anyway, is everything looking good for this evening?’ she asked.
